Previous Walks:

I shall lead a walk on the above date starting 11.00 am  at St Michael’s Church,  School Rd, Amberley, Arundel BN18 9NA and finishing  there. I led this walk in 2017. Only street parking is available I am afraid. Do share cars if you can.We shall go up Amberley Down along South Downs Way. It will be hilly but no more challenging than the recent Bignor Hill Walk which people managed without a problem.  I measured the distance last time as 3.88 miles. However on Monday we shall make  a short extension and do slightly over 4 miles. For a lot of the time we shall follow a path which on a clear day provides excellent views to the left and right. We can make a short stop at  some ancient burial mounds  before proceeding to a trig point and then turn back to retrace our path. The extension I referred to above is to let everybody see some wild flowers which impressed me last Monday. If the weather holds it should be a nice day out. The peace could be disturbed by the odd aircraft doing aerobatics over the river Arun. It can be noisy but entertainment of a sort if the pilot loops the loop. But he/she  will be a long way from us and pose no danger. In any case he/she soon should soon run low on fuel or get tired and head back to Goodwood or somewhere.
There was no mud on the terrain last Monday but if it rains heavily between now and next Monday things could change. Please be prepared with separate clean footwear to use at the lunch to follow. Dogs should be on a lead. We will come to several fields with sheep and very accessible to dogs.
I have booked a lunch table for 12 people at the Sportsman Inn, Crossgates, Amberley, Arundel BN18 9NR  at 1.30 pm
This pub is well worth going to if nothing else for it’s superb location overlooking the Arun river valley. People should consider joining us for lunch even if they are not doing the walk.
Please advise me whether you would like to join the walk and/or lunch. If however you do want to come to lunch please study the attached menu and mention in your reply your pre-order – the manager says he’ll need pre-orders for a group our size. Also please copy Sophie at the Sportsman on . IE both Sophie and I should see your pre-order.
In summary if you want to join us for walk and lunch or just lunch please email me (  ) and Sophie with your pre-order. If, however you only want to join the walk you can email or text me (07876764096).
Hope to see you next Monday

Hi Walkers

I shall lead a walk starting and finishing at the public car park behind the George Pub, Main Street, Burpham, Arundel, West Sussex BN18 9RR on Sunday.
20/5/18. I last did this walk in January 2017 The walk will be hilly. There will be ups and downs including a 200 yard stretch that is quite steep and leads up
to John Upperton’s Gibbet. (The poor chap was hanged for committing one robbery. He either stole £1 or £120. We’ll never know for sure but it was 1771).
The walking distance including a trig point is 5.26 miles (8.47 km). Please allow 2 hours and twenty minutes for the walk There will be good views to take in
at various times but particularly at the trig point.
This pub is in great demand. They have only been able to give me 12 lunch places I requested because I booked more than 2 weeks in advance. Furthermore
2 pm is the earliest booking time they could give me and I have accepted it. I therefore suggest a later than usual start time of 11.30 am. Please could everybody
be there and ready to start the walk at 11.15 am in case the pub landlord wants us to pre-order our food.
Walkers should be prepared for any kind of weather and it could be muddy in places. Please have clean footwear to use inside the pub.
The car park can fill up so car-sharing is advisable. But there are other places to park in the village. Please could those who intend to join the walk and/or
lunch text or ring my mobile 07876764096 specifying their exact intentions. They can also email me on but should do so in good time.
Also although I would like all 12 lunch places to be taken up please don’t request a lunch place without committing to it. Last minute cancellations are not fair
on the pub who turn away other customers to give us the places we request.
I hope there will be lots of walkers and that all 12 lunch places will be taken up
Thanks and Regards

Heather is doing a walk on Sunday 22nd April at Climping. Meet at The Blackhorse Pub, Climping Street, West Sussex BN17 5RL at 10.45am ready for 11am start. Please ring or text Heather on mobile if you are coming and want lunch 07934 192782. There will be a carvery lunch £10.90 and only sandwiches, salads, and baguettes as an alternative. I hope to get back to pub around 1pm. lt may be muddy in some places, and we will be walking some of the time along the beach.
Hope weather stays nice.

Dear fellow walkers,

Maureen and I would like to post a walk from The Coach & Horses Pub at Compton ( Address – The Square ComptonPO18-9HA) for the 6th of May.

This an attractive and varied walk of about 4.9 miles length, with a mix of wide reaching views across the beautiful Spring countryside, some Woodland trails and Downs trails and an attractive medieval enclosed track ( almost a tunnel). We will also encounter a meticulously restored 16th Century cart house along the way. There are some excellent views across the valley towards the Large Georgian ‘pile’ known as Uppark ( owned by the National Trust and well worth a visit if you have never been there) and everywhere is looking at its Spring-like best.

The vast majority of the walk is on good tracks through gently undulating countryside with only two or three moderate inclines and a refreshing absence of mud! However, there are two slightly stiffer climbs, the first being shortly after we start off from the pub, lasting for only about 700 yards where we are rewarded at the top with a great view across the fields, to the Isle of Wight. The second, slightly less steep slope a little later on, takes us to a higher point and lasts for only about 500 yards before levelling off. From then on it’s more or less plain sailing.

The pub serves good food ranging from full meals to lighter fare, including baguettes, so hopefully something for everyone. The pub is untried by the group ( as is this walk) as far as we know. The Landlord would like us to order our lunches before we leave in the morning and as the walk is a little longer than usual, it would be helpful if everyone could arrive by 10.40 am. This will give us time to get our orders in and boots on, so that we can start walking not later than 11 am ( maybe a little earlier if possible). There is no pub car park, but parking should be easy enough in the small square opposite the pub or down the side road just off to the left of the square. The walk itself will start from outside the pub itself.

We have booked a table for 18 people. As usual it will be on a ‘first come first served’ basis, namely the first 18 walkers to confirm for the walk and lunch, will have a guaranteed seat at the tables and others will need to take ‘pot luck’ ( though we would try to add to the numbers if possible). As always, anyone wanting to walk but not stay for lunch is more than welcome, but please also confirm in advance, so that at we at least know the numbers in total, to expect on the walk itself.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible and will keep our fingers crossed for fair weather!

All best wishes

John & Maureen

Helen and I will lead a walk this Sunday 25th of March meet in the village hall car park on the main road called the Street which is just past the cafe we can eat at at the top end of the village.

We will be walking up to the windmill at Halnaker and if there is time we can take a detour on the way back to the Boxgrove Priory before we eat, dogs are welcome in the cafe. We did check out the walk it can be a bit blowy at the top of the hill and the paths are fairly muddy as you would expect after the amount of rain we have had of late but it nice walk with some great views if we have some blue skies on the day.

Sunday 10th of September 11am start.

Since there was no walk last Sunday I shall lead an out-of-sequence walk next Sunday starting and finishing at the Spotted Cow Pub – Selsey Road, Hunston, Chichester, West Sussex PO20 1PD. The pub is on the B2145 not far from Chichester. I don’t know the exact distance we shall cover but we should finish in two hours or less. We may use the pub car park but I suggest car sharing. The terrain is flat. However it could be wet and muddy, so we should all bring separate shoes for use in the pub. The walk will take place even if it rains – we will show solidarity with those poor folks being hit by hurricane Irma at this moment. We may need waterproof clothing. I aim to get to the pub car park at 10.45 am and to start the walk at 11 am

I last led this walk in May 2016 so it may be new to some of our present members and not too recent for the others! Could members who would like to join the walk please let me know by email, text or phone call please, especially if they want to join us for lunch. Indeed there is no reason why people shouldn’t come along just to join us at lunch so long as they let me know in advance on any of , 07876764096 or 02392482842 .

I have provisionally booked a table for 12 people at 1.15 pm. I shall see you all on Sunday.

Thanks and Regards

Sunday 20/8/17 starting and finishing in the car park of Sinah Warren Hotel, Ferry Rd, Hayling Island, PO11 0BZ. It will be on flat terrain along the Hayling Billy Trail.

After the meal I invite our walking friends to my beach hut where I shall provide sparkling wine and fruit juice There are chairs and tables at the beach hut for our comfort. If it is sunny some of us, certainly including me, will want to swim. I did swim last Sunday and it was enjoyable. So why not bring your swimming gear along?

Would walkers please let me know if they wish to join the walk, especially if they intend to have lunch, using my email address, or my landline 02392482842 or mobile 07876764096.

Thanks and Regards Dev

Weds 23rd  November an extra walk in mid week lunch time as below.

For anyone looking for an extra walk who can take time out during the week see details below.

We still plan to do this walk on a Sunday in the New Year but it is very pleasant and varied, so would easily stand a repeat performance. Please let John & Maureen know if you would like to join them at

Sunday 6th November from Compton Recreation car park.

Circular walk taking just over 2 hours from Compton Recreation Ground car park, on B2146, to south of Compton village square. Several climbs & descents with good views across to Uppark and fleeting glimpses of Chichester Harbour and IOW.

Walk will start from the car park at 10.50 to make sure we get back to Victoria Inn, West Marden by 1.15 but please read leader/s comments.

Up to 16 booked at Victoria Inn, West Marden, for 1.15pm.
Meet at 10.30 at Victoria Inn, PO18 9EN, to choose your meal from the menu. There is plenty of parking on the road.
If possible we can car share up to Compton Recreation Ground car park as there is limited parking there, leaving some cars by the pub.
Please let us know numbers walking & eating by Friday midday. Hope that many of you can join us,

Margaret & Patrick.

email: or Margaret’s mobile 07876631347

Sunday 23rd October from The Fox Goes Free pub at Charlton.

There is parking in the pub car park just beyond the pub on the left. Please arrive at about 10.45 am for a prompt ‘off’ at 11am. In the expectation of a reasonable turnout a table is booked for 14 people. This is one of the most popular pubs around the area, hence the need to have booked it well in advance. They have emphasised that they will be unlikely to be able to accommodate any increase in the numbers booked on a Sunday, so the booked seats will need to be allocated to the first 14 walkers who let us know they wish to come on the walk and lunch afterwards.

NB: On Sunday’s in the restaurant area, where we are accommodated, dogs are not allowed. We look forward to a great turnout and even better weather!
All the best
