Stoughton Down

Stoughton Down

This walk starts and finishes at the Forestry Commission Car Park, Stoughton Down.

Follow the road that runs from the Barley Mow Pub, Walderton, past The Hare and Hounds Pub, in Stoughton,  West Sussex PO18 9JQ for about a mile beyond before reaching the car park. The car park is at a right-angled bend at the end.

This is a popular walk and beautiful in all seasons but the photos shown were taken in October 2019 when the Autumn colours were quite glorious. The walk usually takes around two hours to complete and is between 4 and 5 miles long.

Stoughton Down walk Beech forests

On a clear day there are some good views to take in near the ancient burial mounds at the top of Stoughton Down.

Stoughton Down walk burial mounds

Returning from the ancient burial mounds we follow the path through the beech woods. On the return paths there is an unusual formation of trees, where the branches bow over the footpath, creating a tunnel effect. In the aftermath of wet weather, the last leg of the path often gets very muddy. So, in the advent of heavy rainfall, it’s advisable to wear waterproof boots or wellies.

Thanks to Dev, who occasionally offers this walk to the group. It looks different every time but I can certainly vouch for the views!
